The Love Punch 3 1/2 Rom Com Hearts

The Love Punch 3 1/2 Rom Com Hearts

I love Emma Thompson and Celia Imrie, not so much Pierce Brosnan or Timothy Spall. It's an amusing tale of typical divorced couple forced into close proximity through necessity and so re-falling in love. They must perform a kidnapping and a heist so makes for some funny moments and is your run of the mill romcom with nice performances by the leading gals. Worth a look on a rainy afternoon.

Fury 4 1/2-5 Drama Hearts

Fury 4 1/2-5 Drama Hearts

Directed by David Ayer, with an all star cast of Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Pena and John Bernthal, it is quite simply, an outstanding movie. The performances are simply stellar; young Logan really comes of age and Shia's madness was worth all the press if this is the result. Led by a mature Pitt, Pena and Bernthal too hold up their ends as supporting cast of formidable value.

It's the hero story of a lone tank that stands against the wrath and might of the German army. It;'s a story of incredible bravery, fast friendships, sacrifice, fear, love, God... it's a deeply touching, violent and cerebral movie that will leave you thinking about it for weeks to come.

A Walk Among the Tombstones 4 1/2 Action/Thriller Hearts

A Walk Among the Tombstones 4 1/2 Action/Thriller Hearts

Starring Liam Neeson this grim thriller is action packed from the first footage. He has his isolated hero patter and tone down perfectly by now, but Liam to me, can do little wrong. As promised, it's dark, he's persistent and resilient and ultimately a good guy at heart.

The story line is creepy and the fear builds nicely bringing us closer to the face of pure evil we are all terrified of. Gruesome in their treatment of the victims, the team of killers are stalked by the relentless PI, hot on their heels and out to stop them.

Writer/ director Scott Frank has accomplished a splendid film, eerie in its ambiance and beautiful in its photography.

Hundred Foot Journey 4 Comedy Hearts

Hundred Foot Journey 4 Comedy Hearts

Starring Helen Mirran, the adorable Om Puri, the yummy Manish Dayal and Charlotte Le Bon, it's a sweet story about food. There seems to be a glut of those about at the moment. Old cook Puri stubbornly opens up his Bombay Palace restaurant opposite the Michelin starred and very conservative French restaurant run by Mirren. Let the war begin. Young chef Dayal proves to be an outstanding chef and the battle for him begins too.

It was enjoyable, sweet and funny.

Before I Go To Sleep 4 1/2 Thriller Hearts

Before I Go To Sleep 4 1/2 Thriller Hearts

Starring Nicole KIdman (not my favourite), Colin Firth and Mark Strong this is an excellent thriller where Kidman is not annoying at all. She performs the part of amnesiac woman well [whereas usually it's me who wants to be amnesiac after watching some of her films- Dogwood anyone?] and the suspension is built beautifully under the guidance of director Rowan Joffe who does a super job on this, his fourth film.

I don't want to spoil the fun but it is worth the time to watch.

The Judge 4 1/2 Drama Hearts

The Judge 4 1/2 Drama Hearts

Starring Robert Duvall as the archetypal grumpy but well intentioned and integrous judge and Robert Downey Jnr as his successful but looking for approval son. It is set in small town America following the death of Downey's mother which brings him back to his estranged family. While there, his father is accused of murder and so Downey stays and tries to reconcile with his father and to save him from the jail that will surely take his life.

It is superb. I won't waffle on but have no fear in watching this mesmerising drama; it is wonderful in its execution and Downey comes of age under the expert tutelage of Duvall.

Babies [Bebies] 5 Adorable Documentary Hearts

Babies [Bebies] 5 Adorable Documentary Hearts

What does it say about me that my top three favourite movies are all French? Bebies, Intouchables and Le Choriste. This is directed by French director/ writer Thomas Balmes. It stars Bayar from Mongolia, Hattie from San Francisco, Mari from Japan and Panijao from Namibia. It follows the birth and first year of these four babies. It has no dialogue other than the gurgling of the babies and inane drivel of parents in the background [ the classic San Fran Hippie dad saying, "we're eating off a piece of bark because daddy forgot to pack a spoon..."]. It is simply enchanting and you want to take all of them home- even my grown male children loved the film. I have seen it 6 times and never tire. Watch the adorable Bayar who is just so full of personality that you will die laughing.

The Giver 3 1/2 Sci Fi Hearts

The Giver 3 1/2 Sci Fi Hearts

Starring Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges with the young talent of Brenton Thwaites (Maleficent) I anticipated it would be better than it was. I like young Brenton but felt he was a bit wet in this although I appreciate he was going for young hero with empathy and passion. It was an interesting idea but i felt the world would surely not fall for this amount of oversight by government agency let alone agree to daily 'vitamins'. While enjoyable you must engage in a willing suspension of disbelief. It was all a bit unbelievable. And the hero running off with baby in tow? Really?

Mockingjay Part 1 3 Drama Hearts

Mockingjay Part 1 3 Drama Hearts

Loved the books (young adult fiction so, in a restricted sense) and the first rendition and Liam and J Law and Josh Hutcherson... but didn't particularly think they ended this as a cliffhanger. I felt let down and felt the story should not have been shortened. And it was not because I was grumpy as Dendy Premier lounge were looking after me and feeding me and of course there was wine... it was a bit flat and uneventful even though lots happened. Maybe we're all getting jaded. How sad.

The Maze Runner 3 1/2 Sci Fi Hearts

The Maze Runner 3 1/2 Sci Fi Hearts

Starring Dylan O'Brien, Aml Amin and Ki Hong Lee among other super young talents it is a story along the lines of Divergent. It was somewhat annoying with the archetypal American teenager hero v aliens but it had some redeeming qualities and overall I enjoyed it. I loved Divergent and am a shameless lover of young adult fiction (although not particularly to read). I don't know why; probably because I'm still immature or maybe just because I love Sci Fi and this sub-genre is the only one available at the moment. Whatever, if you liked Divergent you'll like this I think. They've set it up for a trilogy too I should think so look forward to the next installment although not with the agitated impatience of say, Lord of the Rings.

The Equalizer 4 Action Hearts

The Equalizer 4 Action Hearts

Starring Denzel. I loved it. I thought it would be a bit naff even though I adore him and will happily marry him if his wife ever dumped him (as if). But it was fun in a seen-it-before-assassin-comes-out-of-retirement sort of way. But the inclusion of the quirky Chloe Grace Moretz (Kickass) and the adorable Johnny Skourtis made the film. Lots of awesome action and look for the phenomenal Bunnings tool ad towards the end. Never seen them used THIS way before...

The Calling 4 Drama hearts

The Calling 4 Drama hearts

Starring Susan Sarandon as a drunk, washed up cop (at least it was a woman this time) stuck in Frozenville, Ssomewhere obscure. Her deputy Gil Bellows and she welcome the new rookie Topher Grace into their modest homicide division when a couple of strange murders happen.

As the story progresses so does the intrigue and with it, Micallef's self esteem and hunger to solve a case. It is creepy and the serial killer genre honoured with a solid film that is worth the watch.

Fading Gigolo 4 Drama hearts

Fading Gigolo 4 Drama hearts

Woody Allen is out of fashion but he is a clever film maker and his bumbling style still has charm even though you want to castrate him. John Turturro wrote, directed and starred in the film which is often a recipe for disaster. But he actually pulls it off well.

His aging pal Murray is looking for ways to make money and stumbles across the idea of putting rich, lonely widows (or unhappy wives) with his friend Fioravante, a quiet florist who thinks him mad but gives it a go.

It is funny and moving. Fioravante's tenderness carries the film and makes it more poignant than it might have been considering the sexy Sharon Stone and Sofia Vergara could have made it a tad less salubrious.

The Other Woman 3 1/2 Comedy hearts

The Other Woman 3 1/2 Comedy hearts

I presumed it would be along the lines of the First Wives Club and I was right. But it was amusing. Diaz doesn't do it for me really (although don't get me wrong, I'd be her in a flash) but the really funny one is Leslie Mann. She was superb in the Change Up and while she often goes too far and makes you cringe and want to put a sock in her mouth, it's often what makes her so funny. She is outrageous and we all want her to be our friend and go out for drinks with her that start in a London pub and end up in Tokyo nightclub.

The delicious Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is the husband/ boyfriend in question and is wonderful as the complete shit. His wooing of his wife and the realisations she comes to regarding his slippery promises and forked compliments lead to some real moments that many of us can relate to.

Leslie is crazy but the situation in which she finds herself is mindblowingly crazy.
