Nightcrawler 4 Creepy Hearts

Nightcrawler 4 Creepy Hearts

To be honest after Gyllenhall's last effort with Enemy, I was loathe to watch this and thought I'd be throwing things at the screen again half way through just to get some adrenalin going so I didn't die of boredom but it was a good film. Not my fav, but pretty good.

The weird guy who can't get a job decides to trawl for live coverage of news stories that are gory and heart rending, only he isn't at all heart rended. But he is very good at it. Jake is pretty good at this type of character and it's put me off wanting to marry him.

You're Not You 4 Drama Hearts

You're Not You 4 Drama Hearts

It's a drama that follows the diagnosis of famous and talented Hilary Swank with ALS- a degenerative disease that is terminal. It is an adorable film as she and her quirky caregiver, Emmy Rossum find a love and respect for each other. Josh Duhamel is the hunky husband. It's a tear jerker and you have to have kleenex handy but it was worth it. A lovely film about friendship, love, death, loss, loyalty, forgiveness...

Interstellar 4 Drama Hearts

Interstellar 4 Drama Hearts

Starring Matthew McConaughy and Anne Hathaway, you spend much of the film asking yourself, WTF. But for all that, and it does deal with tremendously deep existential and scientific questions, it is an enjoyable film and thoroughly thought-provoking if not enlightening per se.

As No. 1 son said, you must sit for 1/2 hour after the end of the film and cogitate the meaning of it all. It is a fascinating look into time and the various dimensions that exist beyond our comprehension. It is not an idle action film to be viewed on a rainy Sunday but one that requires your attention and willingness to go on the journey into and through time.

Breach 4 1/2 Drama Hearts

Breach 4 1/2 Drama Hearts

Starring Chris Cooper (Conklin in Bourne Identity) and Ryan Phillippe (yummy- Chaos, Crash, The Lincoln Lawyer) it's an intriguing spy thriller based on a true story. Only in America; only in the CIA. But it was a spiffing movie and thoroughly enjoyable.

Rookie Phillippe is set to snoop on his boss, suspected by the powers that be, of espionage (isn't that delicious word?). We find Cooper to be paranoid, clever and cunning but is he who he portrays himself to be; solid patriot, devout Christian? Or devious spy?

Love the Depp. The film was riveting- it's Roman Polanski's after all and he is a master. Some nice performances, bit of intrigue, bit of love interest with the delicious Emmanuelle Seigner. But the ending spoiled it for me. Just seemed ridiculous which is a shame in the age where we believe anything is possible thanks to CGI and some out there authors. Have to think about how I'd do it differently... so shouldn't really criticise unless i have a better idea... which I don't.

Let's Be Cops 4 Comedy Hearts

Let's Be Cops 4 Comedy Hearts

Starring Jake Johnson and Daman Wayans Jnr (I call clone!), I was watching it with the young adult son and expected that after a couple of minutes I'd quietly excuse myself with some urgent hair washing or facial tweezerings but I actually really enjoyed it.

The idea is that two guys go out fancy dress as cops only to find everyone believes them to be the real mccoy so they continue with the prank enjoying mischief and mayhem. And they get entrenched with criminals and shoot em ups and car chases but it's well done and Jake and Daman have some serious chemistry that works well.

There is one scene when they're on surveillance and they take over a woman's apartment - i don't know who the actress is but damn she's hilarious. I have not seen such seriously funny moves on a woman in a long time- maybe Melissa?

It's quirky teenage stuff but well done and funny.

This Is Where I Leave You 3 Comedy Hearts

This Is Where I Leave You 3 Comedy Hearts

It's true Jane Fonda's tits are worth looking at and Jason Bateman as her son does a great job of being 'just no, mom' about it but it was a bit short of laughs and more into the heartache that is families. Which is not to say it's a bad movie, just not the roll in the aisles one you might be expecting. I love Tina Fey when she's on form and Rose Byrne as a love interest (whose isn't she?). Adam Driver was a delight as the shit stirring little brother.

It's a premise that is old (The Big Chill, The Judge, Death at a Funeral et al...) where all meet at a funeral and old issues re-emerge and are painstakingly resolved. But it is amusing and cringeingly true in so many ways.

My Old Lady 4 Comedy Hearts

My Old Lady 4 Comedy Hearts

Starring the indomitable Maggie Smith, Kirstin Scott Thomas and Kevin Kline the film is directed by Israel Horovitz. Is it racist to suggest that I tend to admire the Jewish sense of humour and I believe this film is full of clever humour and a deep understanding and empathy for the vagaries of the human condition? It is deeply moving while being lighthearted and funny (another trait I attribute to the Jewish people.)
Kevin inherits the apartment in Paris from his father only to turn up and find his mistress resident there for the duration of her life according to French law and owing her rent if he intends to stay.

The journey the two of them and her daughter, Scott Thomas end up undertaking is a wonderful study of human frailty, love, selfishness... I really liked it.

Keanu Reeves at his yummiest. It's full on action violence and I was pretty damned impressed by what is some of the best violence choreography I've seen in a long time. He's an assassin awakened by some nasty types to come back and kick the shit out of them.

Seen the story before but Keanu has grown into a fine older man *swoon* who can do a pretty fine nasty bad boy; silent but deadly. Bought it.

Kill the Messenger 4 Thriller Hearts

Kill the Messenger 4 Thriller Hearts

Directed by  Michael Cuesta and starring the delicious Jeremy Renner, there are other stars, but Renner holds court and holds your attention along with a solid performance by his on-screen wife, Rosemarie deWitt. It's a captivating drama that keeps you guessing and simultaneously wanting to close your eyes with disbelief at he duplicity of our own governments.

Investigative journalist Gary Webb (based on a true story) uncovers the nasty knowledge held by the CIA concerning the whole Contra Rebel mess in the 70's. It is a hair raising watch and frightening just how brave and determined Webb had to be to overcome the very real threats against him and his family.

Make sure you wait to the very end to see what happened to him in real life. It's mind blowing.

Tammy 3 1/2- 4 Comedy Hearts

Tammy 3 1/2- 4 Comedy Hearts

You know, Melissa McCarthy is a much underrated actress. I know she gets off on her 'big' girl comedy stuff - which she is great at- but this showed a whole new side to her that summoned pathos from the audience as well as sympathy and humour. She was the usual loser to start with that brings chuckles from us but she transformed throughout into someone with great depth and a deal of attractive allure. Along with Susan Sarandon as her hapless grandmother, the pair made a great team which resulted in a thoroughly enjoyable watch of an updated Thelma & Louise without the horrific but inevitable car drop at the end.

Crash 4 1/2 - 5 Drama Hearts

Crash 4 1/2 - 5 Drama Hearts

Directed by Paul Haggis and starring a shit load of amazing actors this is a brilliant film. It is NOT a comedy, it is pretty heavy in many places but the theme of racism is thought provoking to say the least. It covers many other human and relationship issues and the script is witty, clever and clean.

Starring Keith David, (the divine) Loretta Devine, Thandie Newton, Michael Pena, Ryan Philippe, Terence Howard, Matt Dillon, Don Cheadle, Sandra Bullock, Brendon Fraser, Ludacris, Bahar Soomekh, Larenz Tate... it just goes on and on. And they all put in superb performances. It is essentially a snapshot of Los Angeles and the many lives that reside and intersect there. It is profound, moving, sad and amusing and a little bit magical.

The Rover 2 Drama Hearts

The Rover 2 Drama Hearts

Sorry to be a poop head as I do adore Guy Pearce and he was superb in this- really scary but... it should have been retitled"The Thank God It's Over". Pattinson does a smashing job of being a stereotypical Deliverance Back-country simpleton who's accent is so good I understood pretty well sod all of anything he said (much like the first 3 episodes of The Wire). After half the movie of intense, beautifully dark and moody atmospherics and deeply emotional acting however, I was pretty well over it. I kept waiting for something to happen... and well it didn't really. There was little premise to the storyline and if it was an exercise in existentialism, then it was lost on me I'm afraid.
