The Chorus- five drama hearts

My favourite film. I can't tell you how moving, how sweet, how funny... Before the Intouchables, there was Le Choriste. Set in the French countryside in the forties, this oscar nominated film follows the story of Clement Mathieu (Gerard Jugnot), a disenfranchised music teacher who must resort to teaching at a school of disturbed and disturbing boys.

Francois Berleand is the sycophantic and psychotic headmaster with whom Mathieu must contend when he comes up with the novel idea of calming the savage beasts with music. The experiment triumphs and the voice of the choir has not been heard outside of Heaven. Jean-Baptiste Maunier has the voice of an angel and will have you closing your eyes in ecstasy.

The story is a sad tale but the powerful performances and extraordinary depth of character has you deeply embedded in the story with the characters. It is a story of  deprivation, diabolical discipline and at the same time heartbreaking beauty and hope through determination and love.
